    Back to Prepare for travel
Whenever you leave the country, you need to take valid travel documents with you. Here you can check the specific travel conditions for your trip.

    Passport and visa

Every country has its own rules for visitors of various nationalities. When visiting certain countries, for example, your passport has to be valid for at least another six months following your return to the Netherlands. Certain countries also require a visa. You can request a visa from the embassy of the country you will be visiting; some countries grant visas upon your arrival.

Please note: travellers to the United States will also have to request supplementary travel authorization from the ESTA website. Read more about making this request from ESTA

    Advance Passenger Information

If you travel to Australia, Canada, China, Cuba, Dominican Republic, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Mexico, New Zealand, Panama, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom or the United States, we are required to collect various personal information.

This ‘Advance Passenger Information’ (API) includes data in a passenger's passport or travel document as well as other information. When travelling to the United States, you must also provide the first address at which you will be staying at your destination. The API data is sent to the immigration authorities of your destination.

The API data includes information on the machine-readable zone on your passport:
    • Family name and first name
    • Date of birth and gender
    • Passport number
    • Country that issued the passport
    • Passport expiration date
    • Nationality
    • Country of residence (for travel to the United States only)
    • Temporary address where you will be staying (for travel to the United States only). This address must include the house number, street, city/town, abbreviation used for the state and the zip code.

We recommend you provide this information to your travel agent, or during online check-in. If checking in online is not possible, you can also enter the necessary data at a self service check-in machine at the airport. If you depart from an airport where you can only check in at the desk, our staff will register the API data on your passport.

When travelling to the United States, there are some exceptions in which you do not have to provide Advance Passenger Information.

    Immunizations and precautionary measures

Before travelling to many tropical/subtropical destinations, immunizations and other precautionary measures are advisable or even required. Often, these measures must be taken a certain length of time prior to your departure. Make sure to get the right information about the area you will be visiting four to six weeks before your departure. You can contact one of the KLM Travel Clinic locations. These locations are listed at the bottom of this page.

    Medical services at the airport

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has a 24-hour First Aid Post where you can go if you need emergency first aid. This post is also open at certain hours to provide the services of a general practitioner and to obtain medical examinations. There is also a pharmacy that makes it convenient to pick up your medications at Schiphol before your departure. The First Aid Post and the pharmacy at Schiphol are located in Departure Hall 2 on the floor overlooking check-in counter 16. The pharmacy is open on workdays from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm but emergency medications can be obtained 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The pharmacy can be contacted at +31 (0)20 648 14 50.
